Wikipedia describes Flyball as follows

Flyball is a dog sport in which teams of dogs race against each other from a start/finish line, over a line of hurdles, to a box that releases a tennis ball to be caught when the dog presses the spring loaded pad, then back to their handlers while carrying the ball.

Flyball is run in teams of four dogs, as a relay. The course consists of four hurdles placed 10 feet (3 m) apart from each other, with the starting line six feet (1.8 m) from the first hurdle, and the flyball box 15 feet (4.5 m) after the last one, making for a 51-foot (15.5 m) length. The hurdle height is determined by the shoulder height of the smallest dog in the team.

Under current North American Flyball Association (NAFA) rules this should be 5 inches (12.7 cm) below the withers height of the smallest dog, to a height of no less than 7 inches (20.3 cm) and no greater than 14 inches (40.6 cm). Each dog must return its ball all the way across the start line before the next dog crosses. Ideal running is nose-to-nose at the start line. The first team to have all four dogs cross the finish line error free wins the heat. Penalties are applied to teams if the ball is dropped or if the next relay dog is released early.

Animal Mania - Dover July 2011 Part 1

I spent a few hours visiting Dover on Saturday having a look at the “animal mania”  event  in the gardens just behind the bus station.  It was exciting and a very buzzy event.  It's the first time I visited although I understand that has been taking place for a few years now.   I was really impressed by the diversity  of animal and children's activities.

The photography business has been so busy in the past few months that I've not had much chance to get out and have a look at other events taking place.   I wasn't working, but couldn't resist taking some photographs along the way.

Here is a selection of some of the dogs that I met along the way.

The Bernese Mountain Dogs - Session

The Bernese Mountain Dog, called in Swiss German the Berner Sennenhund, is a large breed of dog, one of the four breeds of Sennenhund-type dogs from the Swiss Alps.

The name Sennenhund is derived from the German "Senne" (alpine pasture) and "hund" (dog), as they accompanied the alpine herders and dairymen called Senn. Berner (or Bernese in English) refers to the area of the breed's origin, in the Canton of Bern in Switzerland.

This Mountain dog was originally kept as general farm dogs.

Large Sennenhunds in the past were also used as draft animals, pulling carts.

Would you Take a pay cut if you Could Bring Your Dog to Work?

In a Survey by
Maris Interiors -
85% of employees who have dogs would like to be able to bring them to work, according to a recent survey conducted by office design company Maris Interiors.

Only 5% of dog-owners have however actually ever taken their pet to the workplace.

A surprising 38% admitted they would consider changing jobs if it meant they were able to bring their dog in. 16% of dog-owners surveyed would give up one weeks' holiday in order to have their pooch in the office, and 14% would even take a pay cut.

Non-dog owners weren't quite so enthusiastic about the idea - 68% were unhappy to work in an environment with dogs around. Common concerns included fleas, chewed cables, allergies and litter training.

Maris Interiors Chairman, Michael Howard said "We should perhaps be a little cautious about encouraging dogs in the workplace. Whilst they might boost morale for the dog-lovers at work, we have to respect the views of the majority of employees who don't have dogs and don't want their cables chewed!"

New Vets in East Kent

A short while ago I had the pleasure of visiting the opening of a new vets.  I can't remember the last time I went to a new surgery opening. The White Cliffs Veterinary Surgery is run by Chris and Julie who have a combined experience of over 25 years in animal healthcare. That's not bad for a start.  But what was impressive was the brand-new and modern surgery itself, apart from the friendly staff the place was packed with technology.

One thing that I really enjoyed was the safe off-road parking. Anyone who's ever taken animals to the vets knows how important it is to minimise the distractions of passing vehicles and traffic.
They are offering a vaccine for life for puppies and kittens at very affordable rates.
If you're looking for a vet or considering a change I certainly think a visit to Chris and Julie would be worth your while.
Have a look at their website at:
